You know that knot in your stomach, that uncomfortable feeling of dread that makes it impossible to perform the task at hand the way you want to. It could be as innocent as greeting a new person, or as important as making a major presentation in front of an audience. Anxiety affects our lives in so many ways, often holding us back from reaching our goals and aspirations.

Anxiety can have a devastating effect on our self-esteem and self-worth, making it difficult to tackle everyday tasks that would be normal for other people. We are known to avoid public engagements and social gatherings because it makes us feel uncomfortable. Some people experience the psychological symptoms of fear, panic, and worry about what’s about to happen which causes the anxiety. Others have to deal with the physical symptoms as well, which can include sweating, shaking, redness and so on.

Anxiety sufferers can live a miserable and lonely existence if we allow the disorder to consume us. Instead of chasing our dreams, we practice avoidance and engage in self-defeating behaviors. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Be learning how to control and overcome your anxieties, you can begin to live life to the fullest without the fears that usually hold us back.

Getting Your Life Back

I used to dread meeting new people, striking up conversations, making presentations, and so much more. It affected me personally and professionally as anxiety tightened its grip on my life. For me, it was the overwhelming fear of being rejected or seen as “not good enough” by those around me that kept me from succeeding in my goals for a long time. It wasn’t until I became comfortable in my own skin that I was able to relax and engage in meaningful discussions, whether it was one-on-one or in a group setting. Breathing techniques helped a lot along with positive thinking and reinforcement. My breakthrough in overcoming anxiety occurred when I was able to talk to someone I trusted fully with my problems. For you, that could be a loved one, family member, confidant, or a therapist.

The bottom line is that we don’t have to be crushed by anxiety and this disorder doesn’t have to control our lives. In the past, seeing a therapist was taboo and not socially accepted, but today countless individuals engage in therapy sessions. It’s a great outlet that is confidential and safe. As an added bonus, it can greatly lessen your symptoms of anxiety, as it did for me!
